2023: An Indian cricketing retrospective of the year

I began writing this article thinking that I will revisit the year but truth be told, I'm still not over the World Cup Final. I know I should forget it but the heart is too agog with what-ifs and so-near-yet-so-far for a team that truly deserved that glory but anyway, I will not belabor the point. As I sit down to reflect on the past year, the cricketing landscape unfolds like a vivid tapestry of emotions, victories, defeats, and the undying spirit of the game. The year 2023 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with exhilarating highs and heart-wrenching lows. From the thrill of dominating performances to the agony of missed opportunities, the cricketing journey of the year has left an indelible mark on every fan's heart.

The first chapter of this tale is written in the language of heartbreak. The World Test Championship (WTC) Final stands out as a bitter pill to swallow. We had fought tooth and nail to earn our place in the final, displaying grit and determination throughout the tournament. However, destiny had other plans, and on that final day, victory slipped through our fingers. It was a hard pill to swallow, but amidst the disappointment, a resilient spirit emerged. No, we are not chokers. The narrative may suggest otherwise, with our struggles in knockout matches becoming a recurring theme, but we believe in our abilities. The defeats hurt, but they also fuel the fire within us to rise above and conquer.

The One Day International (ODI) Final was another heartbreak etched into the annals of our cricketing journey. We were not just contenders; we were the thorough favorites to clinch the ODI World Cup 2023, playing on our home turf. The road to the final had been paved with dominant performances, showcasing our prowess in every aspect of the game. The parallels to the historic 2003 World Cup Final between Australia and India are uncanny. We found ourselves on both ends of the spectrum – the underdog triumphing in 2003 and the favorite falling short in 2023. It's a bitter irony that adds a poignant layer to our narrative. The wounds are fresh, but they serve as a reminder that cricket is a game of uncertainties, where victory and defeat dance on the fine line of fate.

However, amidst the heartbreaks, there were moments of sheer brilliance and resilience. Our Test cricketing journey was a beacon of hope and accomplishment. From the series against Australia at home to the historic Test win in the Caribbean, our red-ball performance spoke volumes. The test of character in the longer format of the game brought out the best in our players. The art of patience, strategy, and skill were on full display, providing a silver lining to our cricketing saga.

As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves on the brink of yet another challenge – the Test series against South Africa in their own backyard. The anticipation is palpable, and the desire to continue our Test success is burning bright. As we pen down these words, the battle is about to unfold on foreign soil. The challenges are immense, but so is our determination to script another chapter of triumph.

Cricket, like life, is a journey of peaks and valleys. The year 2023 has been a testament to this truth. We've tasted the bitter pill of defeat, but we've also savored the sweet nectar of victory. It's a reminder that cricket is not just a sport; it's an emotion that binds us together as fans, players, and dreamers. The heartbreaks will fade, but the memories of fighting against the odds, the roar of the crowd, and the indomitable spirit of the game will linger on.

As we look ahead to the coming year, let us carry the lessons learned from 2023 – the resilience in the face of defeat, the joy of triumph, and the unwavering belief that, no matter what, we are better than our worst day. The cricketing journey continues, and with each passing day, we inch closer to the next chapter in this beautiful saga of leather meeting willow, of passion meeting skill, and of dreams meeting reality. Here's to the heartbreaks that make us stronger, the victories that make us proud, and the undying spirit of cricket that binds us all. Cheers to a new year, new challenges, and the unending love affair with the game we hold dear. Jai ho!

Our near-misses over the last decade - Chronicling an Indian cricket fan's heartbreaks

As I write this piece, I'm still trying to recover from the World Cup final (and still continuing to fail, so why not write about it and such near-misses to vent out everything that's pent up inside for the last decade or so). This World Cup was a great event where the cricketing world witnessed India's 10 exceptional performances in as many matches, leading up to the final. For India, it marked an undefeated streak that held the promise of glory until THAT unfortunate final day.
The Men in Blue, reminiscent of Karna in the Mahabharata, stood impervious, systematically dismantling opponents with clinical precision. However, fate, with its capricious nature, chose the final as the stage for India's moment of vulnerability, leaving the Indian team and its fans to grapple with the cruel and unforgiving sleight of hand that sport can hand out, to the best of the best.

The narrative of India's unbeaten run leading up to the final reads like a cricketing odyssey. Each match served as a chapter in a story of dominance, where the opposition wasn't just defeated but outplayed by a team that seemed destined for greatness. The confidence, skill, and strategic brilliance displayed by the Indian team left fans and critics alike in awe, establishing them unequivocally as the team to beat in the international cricketing arena.

Yet, cricket, as a microcosm of life's unpredictability, dealt a bitter blow on the final day. The culmination of an otherwise flawless journey was marred by an unexpected setback, a day when the cricketing gods seemed to conspire against the Men in Blue. The result, a stark contrast to the preceding victories, left players and fans grappling with the cruel and unpredictable nature of the sport they hold dear.

Beyond the cricketing arena, the aftermath of the final exposed more than the vulnerability of the Indian team; it laid bare the mentality of cricket fans in neighboring countries. For some, celebrating India's defeat transcends healthy rivalry, descending into the realm of misguided joy. The recurring narrative of ICC equals BCCI, often brandished in moments of Indian triumph, evaporates when defeat befalls the team, underscoring the need for a more sportsmanlike appreciation of the game irrespective of national loyalties.

While this loss may rekindle the 'chokers' tag for India, it's imperative to delve deeper into the team's consistent performance across various formats and tournaments. The list of near misses in crucial matches reads like a poignant chronicle of heartbreak.

Here’s a recap:

1) Final - T20 World Cup 2014

2) Semi Final - ODI World Cup 2015

3) Semi Final - T20 World Cup 2016

4) Final - ICC Champions Trophy (ODI) 2017

5) Semi Final - ODI World Cup 2018

6) Final - World Test Championship 2021

7) Semi Final - T20 World Cup 2022

8) Final Test - India Vs England 2022 (could have given a Test series win in England)

9) Final - World Test Championship 2023

10) Final - ODI World Cup 2023

These aren't just missed opportunities; they are poignant moments that define India's resilience and ability to compete at the highest echelons of the sport consistently.

These so-near-yet-so-far encounters aren't just statistical entries; they are chapters in the narrative of India's unwavering spirit. Each instance where victory slipped through their fingers underscores their mettle and determination, proving that cricket, much like life, is a journey. The path is as significant as the destination, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks is the true measure of a champion.

In reflection, as India reviews their World Cup campaign, it's not merely about the final defeat but the entire journey that led them to that precipice. The journey, marked by strength, skill, and an unyielding spirit, is a testament to the resilience of Indian cricket. While the flame may have flickered in the final, the fire of Indian cricket continues to burn brightly, casting its glow across the global cricketing landscape.

Amidst the glory and heartbreak, one cannot overlook the lessons embedded in India's cricketing journey. The undefeated streak leading to the final showcased the pinnacle of excellence, while the final defeat served as a reminder of the sport's inherent unpredictability. Cricket, a sport that mirrors life's highs and lows, challenges its players and fans alike to navigate the intricate balance between success and failure.

The aftermath of the final also draws attention to the complex dynamics of cricket fandom. The celebration of a rival's defeat, often clouded by misguided joy, exposes a darker side of the cricketing fraternity. Healthy competition should foster appreciation for skill and sportsmanship rather than becoming a breeding ground for divisive narratives and conspiracy theories.

As India faces the possibility of renewing the 'chokers' tag, it is essential to contextualize these moments within the broader scope of their cricketing journey. The list of near misses in significant tournaments is not a testament to inherent weakness but a showcase of India's unwavering presence at the forefront of international cricket. The consistency across formats and conditions globally positions India as a cricketing powerhouse, and the near misses only serve to fuel the determination to secure future triumphs.

The near-victories etched in recent cricketing history aren't merely statistical footnotes; they are the building blocks of India's cricketing identity. Each heartbreaking moment, from the T20 World Cup 2014 to the ODI World Cup 2023, contributes to the resilience and character of the team. The ability to bounce back from the precipice of defeat is what separates champions from contenders, and India's cricketing journey embodies this spirit.

In conclusion, the World Cup campaign, with its peaks and valleys, serves as a microcosm of India's cricketing narrative. The journey, marked by an unbeaten streak, unfortunate setbacks, and near misses in crucial matches, reflects the ebb and flow of the sport. As the Men in Blue navigate the aftermath of the final, the focus must shift from a singular defeat to the broader context of their cricketing journey – a journey characterized by resilience, skill, and an unyielding spirit that ensures the flame of Indian cricket continues to burn brightly on the global stage.

What ails Pakistan cricket?

Cricket in Pakistan has always been a source of pride and passion for millions of fans. From the glory days of legends like Imran Khan and Wasim Akram to the recent success in limited-overs cricket, Pakistan has had its fair share of cricketing highs. However, beneath the surface, the cricketing landscape is marred by a series of issues that continue to ail the sport in the nation. In this blog post, we will delve into the various ailments that have plagued Pakistan cricket, from administrative politics and nepotism to a lack of vision for domestic infrastructure, workload management, a timid approach in the modern game, a failure to create adequate backups for key players, and the undue focus on T20 cricket at the expense of Tests and ODIs.

Administrative Politics and Nepotism

One of the fundamental problems within Pakistan cricket is the politics and nepotism prevalent in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Appointments and decisions are often influenced by political agendas rather than merit. This has led to a lack of transparency and accountability in the administration, which can have detrimental effects on the team's performance.

Lack of Vision for Improving Domestic Infrastructure

While Pakistan boasts a rich talent pool, the country's domestic infrastructure is in dire need of improvement. There is a lack of proper coaching, facilities, and competitive structures at the grassroots level. Without a clear vision for enhancing domestic cricket, it's challenging to nurture and develop the next generation of cricketers.

Poor Workload Management

Workload management is crucial for sustaining players' performance and preventing injuries. Unfortunately, Pakistan cricket has often struggled in this aspect. Players, especially fast bowlers, have been overused, resulting in injuries and fatigue. Proper scheduling and rotation are essential to ensure that players are in their best form.

Timid Approach in the Modern Game

Cricket has evolved over the years, with an emphasis on aggressive and dynamic play. Unfortunately, Pakistan's approach has often been seen as timid and conservative, especially in Test cricket. The inability to adapt to the demands of the modern game has cost Pakistan on various occasions. Where are the players who can match up to the likes of SKY, Rohit, Maxwell or Pollard? They prefer to sit back and play conservative cricket in the initial overs instead of taking on the bowling and dominating proceedings right from the start.

Lack of Creating Adequate Backups

Every cricket team needs a strong bench to cope with injuries and form slumps among key players. Pakistan, however, has been notorious for not creating an adequate pool of backup players. When top players are unavailable, the team's performance often suffers.

Focusing Only on T20 Cricket and Neglecting Tests and ODIs

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the priorities of Pakistan cricket towards T20 cricket, particularly due to the financial success of T20 leagues like the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Neglecting Tests and ODIs can lead to a lack of depth in the squad, decreased skills in these formats, and a decline in the ability to compete internationally. A balanced approach that values all formats of the game is necessary for the overall health and success of Pakistan cricket.

Conclusion

The ailments affecting Pakistan cricket are multifaceted and deeply ingrained in the system. To rejuvenate and revitalize the sport in the country, it is imperative to address these issues head-on. The PCB must prioritize merit over politics, invest in domestic infrastructure, implement better workload management, and encourage a more aggressive approach to the game. Additionally, fostering a culture of creating and nurturing backup talent is vital for the long-term success of Pakistan cricket.

Only by tackling these issues can Pakistan hope to regain its former glory and consistently compete at the highest level of international cricket. It's high time for a comprehensive and transformative approach to cure the ails of Pakistan cricket and bring back the spirit of excellence and competitiveness.

The secret sauce behind India's cricketing dominance

The 2023 Asia Cup was a spectacle that left cricket enthusiasts worldwide in awe of the Indian cricket team. India's stunning display of talent and teamwork not only clinched them the prestigious tournament but also showcased their formidable depth in the squad. Even while resting several key players from their First Choice XI, India managed to overpower their rivals. In this blog, we'll explore the factors that have contributed to India's remarkable strength in cricket.

Sheer Talent and Numbers

One of the cornerstones of India's cricket prowess is the sheer magnitude of talent and numbers within the country. Cricket is more than just a sport in India; it's a way of life. Youngsters from every nook and corner of the nation dream of donning the Indian jersey, creating fierce competition at all levels. Whether it's for a batting position, pace bowling, wicket-keeping, all-rounder, or spin bowling, India boasts an abundance of aspiring cricketers vying for a spot in the national team. This extensive pool of talent ensures a constant supply of promising players.

Meticulous Planning

Having a surplus of players is just the first step; proper planning and timely utilization are equally essential. India has excelled in nurturing its talent by consistently offering opportunities to fringe players and those earmarked for the next level. The selectors and team management have shown astute judgment in giving youngsters a chance during various series, allowing them to gain invaluable experience and adapt to international cricket's demands. This approach has resulted in a robust bench strength, ready to step in whenever required.

The IPL Advantage

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has played a pivotal role in honing India's cricketing prowess. The IPL is a breeding ground for talent, pitting Indian prospects against the very best from around the world in high-pressure situations. This exposure to top-notch international players and the intensity of T20 cricket has groomed young Indian cricketers, helping them transition seamlessly into the national team. The IPL has also fine-tuned their skills and given them a taste of the global cricketing stage.

Awesome Infrastructure

India's cricket infrastructure is second to none. The country boasts world-class stadiums, state-of-the-art training facilities, and well-maintained grounds. These top-notch facilities not only provide Indian cricketers with the ideal environment for skill development but also attract top talent from a young age. Moreover, the absence of lucrative leagues outside India ensures that players prioritize their commitment to the Indian national team, maintaining a strong core of players who are dedicated to representing their country.

Conclusion

India's triumphant performance at the 2023 Asia Cup and their continued success in international cricket can be attributed to a combination of factors. The sheer talent pool and numbers, meticulous planning, the invaluable IPL advantage, and the outstanding cricket infrastructure have all played pivotal roles in making India a cricketing powerhouse. As Indian cricket continues to scale new heights, the future looks promising, with a formidable team ready to take on any challenge that comes their way. With these elements in place, India is well-prepared to maintain its dominance in the world of cricket for years to come.

Onto the World Cup now, Jai Ho!

Well done, Broadie!

Stuart Broad has announced that he will retire from all forms of cricket in the middle of the current (and final) Ashes Test of this series.
Irrevocably in the hallowed 600+ Test wickets club, Broad will obviously be remembered as one of the highest wicket takers, especially from this era. For someone who had also batted in the lower "lower order" - a euphemism for #11) - Broad was also a handy batsman more than capable of tonking a few on his day.

But apart from every other ability and achievement, if you ask most Indians about their first memory of Stuart Broad, they would hark back to that over of the 2007 T20 World Cup where a certain Mr. Yuvraj Singh took him apart (thanks to a certain Mr. Flintoff too).

In fact, this is why I am writing this article. There he was, in an abyss in 2007, who (that too in international cricket and in a World Cup match nonetheless) had just been clobbered for 6 consecutive sixes in his over.

Even a couple of years later and another World Cup match - this time the stage was the 2009 T20 World Cup where one saw a huge upset: England lost to unfancied Netherlands. They could have won it even till the last ball of the last over, being bowled by guess who - yeah, Broadie!

2 runs were required off one ball. Broadie bowled the last ball, which was hit back at him in his follow-through. He collected the ball and as the batsmen expectedly scampered, he had all three stumps at his end to aim at. A run out could have ensured an England win by 1 run. But his throw was not just off target but even resulted in an overthrow, which meant Netherlands had beated England on the day. Stuart-distraught-Broad.

Now, as we reflect on a glittering career, why have I highlighted these two incidents? No not to cherry-pick some of his lows and mock him. In fact, to share and learn from what one can achieve even from ostensibly a black hole.

Broad is a shining example of tenacity and perseverance. He has taught us that there's no low cannot be surmounted. To borrow the words of that peerless gem, that living legend called Sachin Tendulkar: People (or life) can throw stones at you, you can still turn them into milestones.

Just imagine the mental state of Broadie, after that over in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Or even after missing that throw, which changed the equation from a potential win to a loss (and a momumental upset).

How dejected and heartbroken he must have been. Imagine being in such a situation within two years. He could have collapsed and fallen into an abyss of uninsipiring performances, eventually evanescing into a forgettable career.
Yet, he rose. Like a phoenix from the ashes, from Ashes to Ashes! After all, if you have played non-stop for 14 years (since 2009) in every home Test of the Ashes, you must be doing something right!

600+ Test wickets later, we are looking at a legend of the game. What we must never forget though, is that those two nights could have defined his career, even obliterated it. But it did not happen and thank God it did not happen. So that we could see a living tale pan out of someone who did not get bogged down by the worst lows that life can present.

Thankyou Stuart Broad, for not just a great career but also a great life lesson.
Fare thee well!

Thank you, Test Cricket!

And so, the World Test Championship Final ran its course, with India ending up as the runner-up once again. While it was toughest to swallow the almost no-content and abject, meek surrender by the team, in a way it felt good to see that this defeat would perhaps invoke some wake-up calls to the team, to make sure that they treat the best form of cricket in exactly the way it deserves to be treated - in the best way possible. Still not sure why? Here's a quick overview of why Tests are at an altogether level

Test cricket is often considered the most riveting sport due to several unique characteristics and factors that set it apart from other formats of the game. Here are some reasons why Test cricket is often regarded as an enthralling and captivating sport:

Test of Skill, Technique, and Endurance: Test matches are played over five days, allowing for an in-depth examination of players' skills, technique, and mental resilience. Batsmen have to face numerous deliveries, bowlers strive for consistency, and fielders need to maintain focus for long periods. The extended duration of Test matches creates an intense battle that requires physical and mental endurance from all participants.

Strategic Battles: Test cricket is a strategic game that involves captains and players making decisions over extended periods. The ebb and flow of the game often lead to intense tactical battles, where captains use their expertise to set attacking or defensive fields, devise plans to dismiss batsmen, and manage resources effectively. These strategic maneuvers add layers of complexity and excitement to the sport.

Test of Patience and Concentration: Unlike limited-overs formats, Test cricket demands immense patience and concentration from both batsmen and bowlers. Batsmen must be disciplined to spend long hours at the crease, carefully selecting shots and resisting the temptation to play rashly. Bowlers must maintain accuracy and consistently test the batsmen's skills. The mental challenge of sustaining focus and making the right decisions throughout the match is a captivating aspect of Test cricket.

Tactical Battle Between Bat and Ball: Test cricket offers a fascinating contest between bat and ball. Bowlers strategize to exploit weaknesses and dismiss batsmen, while batsmen aim to counter with solid defensive techniques and find scoring opportunities. The fluctuating balance of power between the two adds an element of uncertainty and suspense to the game.

Changing Pitch and Weather Conditions: Test matches can span different days, allowing the pitch and weather conditions to evolve. The pitch may deteriorate, making it more challenging for batsmen as the match progresses. Weather conditions such as swing-friendly overcast skies or turning tracks can significantly impact the outcome. These ever-changing variables make Test cricket unpredictable and captivating.

Historic Rivalries and Iconic Moments: Test cricket has a rich history and is associated with iconic rivalries and memorable moments. From the Ashes battles between England and Australia to the fierce encounters between India and Pakistan, these historic rivalries evoke intense passion among fans. Test matches have witnessed legendary performances, thrilling comebacks, and nail-biting finishes that have become etched in cricket folklore.

Narrative Building and Test Series: Test cricket unfolds over a series of matches, allowing narratives to develop and rivalries to intensify. The outcome of a single match may contribute to a larger story arc, adding anticipation and significance to subsequent games. This narrative building enhances the overall drama and excitement of Test series.

In conclusion, Test cricket's longer duration, strategic battles, mental challenges, and historic rivalries contribute to its reputation as the most riveting form of the sport. The combination of skill, endurance, patience, and fluctuating dynamics makes Test matches a captivating spectacle for cricket enthusiasts around the world.
Once again, congrats Team Australia and looking forward to a resurgent performance from Team India in Tests too, coming up soon, in West Indies!

My Next Gen Indian T20 XI

What a wonderful IPL 2023 it was! Congratulations to all the organizers and most importantly, the players and spectators.

This year's tournament saw many firsts, loads of close-finishes, redefined benchmarks, umpteen close finishes, and of course, non-stop entertainment.

I do realize this is mostly an exercise in futile academic pursuit, but this is precisely the kind of thing the heart wants to do when it watches some good performances consistently. So, why not? Based on what I saw, there are several top-notch stars who can be earmarked for the future. And so, I set out, to select my Indian XI for the future.

 1. Yashasvi Jaiswal / Prithvi Shaw

 2. Shubman Gill / Ruturaj Gaikwad

 3. Sai Sudharsan / Ishan Kishan (wk)

 4. Suryakumar Yadav / Venkatesh Iyer

 5. Hardik Pandya (c) / Rinku Singh

 6. Rishabh Pant (wk) / Sanju Samson (wk)

 7. Washington Sundar / R. Sai Kishore

 8. Ravindra Jadeja / Raj Bawa

Happy birthday Sachin, another century loading!!

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar - the man, the superhuman, the living legend. Today, as this true Bharat Ratna completes another half-century (this time, life's fifty). it marks the golden jubilee of one of the greatest cricketers to ever grace the game.

For the uninitiated, Tendulkar's career statistics are nothing short of remarkable. He scored 15,921 runs in Test cricket at an average of 53.78, including 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries. In One-Day Internationals (ODIs), he amassed 18,426 runs at an average of 44.83, including 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries. He also played a key role in India's victory in the 2011 Cricket World Cup, scoring 482 runs at an average of 53.55.

But these are still just statistics. Tendulkar's impact on cricket goes beyond mere numbers. I had written earlier about why there will never be another Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. He inspired a generation of cricketers with his work ethic, dedication, and passion for the game. His ability to adapt to different conditions and situations, as well as his sheer love for the sport, made him a role model for aspiring cricketers all over the world.

Off the field, Tendulkar has also been an ambassador for cricket and a philanthropist. He has used his fame and influence to support various social causes, including education, health, and rural development. In 2012, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, as a Member of Parliament.

As Tendulkar completes 50 years of his life, it is a time for reflection and celebration. He has achieved more than most cricketers could ever dream of, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of cricketers to come. His contribution to the sport and to Indian society as a whole is immeasurable, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest icons of our time.

May God bless you with a long, healthy, and happy life Sachin. This is the very least you deserve, for all the joys you have given us forever!

Why should boys have all the fun?

I have talked a lot about the Boys in Blue but it's also important (and apt) to highlight the role of WPL in Indian women's cricket.

The just-concluded Women's Premier League has not only been a massive success in its very first year but it is also a historic step in the domain of women's cricket in India (and even globally).

Finally, we have a great platform where budding Indian women cricketers can share the stage (or at least the dugout) with the best in the world. We already have a very capable Indian team that has consistently done well internationally. Our nemesis has only been the Australian team, which is like the men's all-conquering Aussie team of the late 90s and early 2000s. So while there is no shame in coming up second best against such a side, the WPL is a wonderful avenue for our domestic cricketers to compete and hobnob with the global stars.

And just the way the IPL has helped the Indian men's domestic-level cricketers to earn a respectable amount even if they are not there among the chosen select 15 in the Indian squad, the WPL will ensure that no girl will need to worry about any financial insecurities even if they do not make the final cut at the international level.

This league will also encourage more and more Indian parents and families to let their girls take up the sport. And with the first edition having been such a stupendous success, only better things should be in store, both for the Indian women's cricket setup and also for the game in general.

Onwards to even better times, Happy Navratri, and Jai Ho!

Monday, February 27, 2023

After two of the four Tests in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in India, the hosts have taken an unassailable lead. Having been winners from the previous edition, Team India will retain the trophy even if the Aussies manage to draw the series by winning the next two matches.

But even that looks a distant dream as of now and the most immediate priority for them, even if it might seem only theoretical, is to avoid losing a place in the WTC Final. If Pat Cummins and his men get whitewashed AND if (okay, even if it's a biiig IF..) ..if Sri Lanka can blank out New Zealand on their home turf 2-0, it could well be an India Sri Lanka final. But realistically, the odds of that happening are nearly as much as those of having no rains for a whole week in England.

Nevertheless, the Australians take a lot of pride in their Baggy Green and must be hurting after their disappointing outings in the first couple of matches. Especially in Delhi, where they ceded ground rather abjectly from a position of strength on two key occasions - first, while bowling when they couldn't break through Ashwin and Axar's partnership and only just got a lead by the most slender margin possible. And then, after still ending that day with a wonderful start to their second innings, they frittered away another commanding position by committing harakiri and collapsing within a session the next morning, most dramatically and mindlessly.

Don't go by the scoreline, the series has had riveting moments of quality cricket and intense competition. It's just that these moments have not been enough for any cricket fan's liking and have often been punctuated by poor cricket by the Aussies.

As the caravan heads to Indore, let's hope for some tough cricket and an even better contest in the next two Tests, as a dress rehearsal (albeit in vastly different conditions) for the WTC final at Lord's. Coming soon, this June. Jai Ho!

Mhaari chhoriyaan chhoron se kam hain key?!

Alright then, 2023 has begun on the right note for Team India.

Only, this time, we are (pleasantly) talking with our focus being on the Indian women's cricket team!

As you would have read, our eves have conquered the U-19 World Cup in South Africa, beating England quite convincingly for a comfortable victory in the final. And yes, I know there must be enough cynics around to pooh-pooh this achievement, terming it just as a kids-playing event. But make no mistake, this victory is historic in its own way and is the precursor to many senior, international-level achievements.

In fact, let's just start with the U-19 level itself: agreed it is a junior level, but even till now, how many times have we won it earlier? How many times have other teams won it? Check and you shall realize the magnitude and impact of this achievement in terms of the U-19 level too.

It would also be pertinent to look at the track record of such events. From Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif to Virat Kohli to Ravindra Jadeja in its early years, to Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill now in men's cricket, we have been able to unearth many such potential superstars from the U-19 level. Their victories at the U19 World Cup not only instilled sky-high confidence in them to not just believe in themselves and compete at the senior level. So this is HUGE from our girls.

Let's also not forget, that Shafali Verma is already an established player in the senior Indian team. The mere presence of such a star creates wonders for the confidence of the team and the players have only made everyone proud through their performances. Shafali herself has gained a lot from this tournament, as she has emerged a World Cup winner now and after the disappointment in the previous World Cup at the highest level in Australia, she has now set her sights on the upcoming senior World Cup. Another feather awaits!

This success of the Indian eves also augurs well for the upcoming Women's IPL, where the best of the best in women's cricket will participate. Wins always enhance not only respect but also generate more attention as well as expectations. Our women (and girls) will now rightly be respected much more and will also dazzle much more, both at the Women's IPL as well as at the international level, both in the junior as well as senior categories.

Last but not the least, apart from the all the accolades that all the players and the coaching staff richly deserve, a huge shoutout to every support staff, every selector, every coach, every state association, and most importantly, to all the parents and families of these girls, for encouraging them and supporting them all the way!

Way to go, girls. Here's to many more and even greater laurels in future too.

Jai Ho!
