Jaisball 3, Bazball 1

In a series that witnessed thrilling encounters and exceptional performances, the Indian cricket team emerged victorious against England, claiming the series with a commanding scoreline of 3-1. Let's delve into the match reports of the 3rd and 4th Tests to relive the moments that led to India's triumph.

The 3rd Test
India's performance in the 3rd Test was nothing short of dominant, as they secured a resounding 434-run victory, marking one of their biggest wins by runs in Test cricket. The match showcased India's prowess both with the bat and the ball, leaving England struggling to match their intensity.

Led by the impressive batting display of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who crafted a magnificent double-century, India set an imposing target for England. Jaiswal's innings was characterized by aggressive stroke play, including a remarkable hat-trick of sixes off James Anderson. His partnership with debutant Sarfaraz Khan further demoralized the English bowling attack, as they piled on the runs with authority.

On the bowling front, Kuldeep Yadav's brilliance added to England's woes, as he troubled their batsmen with his spin and guile. Supported by the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, India's bowlers dismantled the English batting lineup, restricting them to a paltry total.

The victory not only showcased India's depth and talent but also reinstated their dominance in home conditions, sending a strong message to their opponents.

Test# 4

In the 4th Test, India faced a challenging chase but displayed steely resolve to overcome England's threat and seal the series win. Despite encountering a wobble in their chase, losing five wickets for 36 runs, India's sixth-wicket pair of Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel showcased resilience and composure to guide their team to victory.

The match witnessed some gripping moments, with England's spinners posing a threat to India's chase. However, Gill and Jurel stood firm, weathering the storm and guiding their team closer to the target with each passing over.

Jurel's contribution in both innings proved pivotal to India's success, as he displayed maturity beyond his experience, anchoring the innings when it mattered the most. Gill, on the other hand, exhibited his class with a composed innings, steering India towards victory with calculated aggression.

Despite England's valiant effort, India's proven record at home and their determined pursuit of the target ensured they emerged triumphant once again.

A Test Series to remember

India's series win over England epitomizes their dominance and resilience in Test cricket. From commanding victories to gritty performances under pressure, the series showcased the depth of talent within the Indian team.

As they celebrate this well-deserved triumph, India will look to build on this success and continue their winning momentum in future encounters. For now, they can bask in the glory of a series well won, reaffirming their status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of cricket.
Jai Ho!

Haara wahi, jo ladaa nahin

It's been a rough start to the first Home Test of the year.

We have lost to Bazball-fueled English side in another tough-to-swallow defeat and some analysis and lessons are in order.

In a stunning turn of events at Hyderabad, England orchestrated one of their greatest Test victories against India, defying all odds and expectations. Falling behind by a massive 190 runs in the first innings, a deficit never before overturned by a visiting team in India, England emerged triumphant in the face of adversity. This victory, undoubtedly, will be etched in the annals of cricket history as a testament to the resilience and determination displayed by the English side.

Ollie Pope's Sweep-Filled Masterclass

The heroics of Ollie Pope stole the show in England's second innings, where he played a pivotal role in turning the game on its head. Scoring a sensational 196 runs, Pope's innings was a masterclass in the art of sweeps, reverse sweeps, and even the audacious reverse Dilscoop. His ability to disrupt the lengths of the Indian spinners left them searching for answers. Pope's fearless approach, reminiscent of Dinesh Chandimal's iconic innings in Galle in 2015, paved the way for England's historic comeback.

Tom Hartley's Debut Brilliance

Debutant left-arm spinner Tom Hartley became an unlikely hero for England, despite a challenging start in his first Test over. Hit for two sixes in his debut over and with a costly analysis in the first innings, Hartley bounced back with a remarkable seven-wicket haul in the second innings. His ability to find the right length and capitalize on the weaknesses of the Indian batsmen showcased the depth and resilience of the English bowling attack.

India's Top-Order Struggles

While England's comeback was remarkable, India's top-order batting struggles played a significant role in their defeat. Rohit Sharma's 39 was the highest score in India's second innings, highlighting the inability of the top order to anchor the chase. The lack of natural sweepers in the Indian lineup became apparent, as the spinners from England capitalized on this weakness.

Ben Stokes' Captaincy and Bowling Brilliance

Ben Stokes, captaining with flair, demonstrated astute leadership in both innings. In the first innings, his attacking captaincy aimed to buy wickets, setting the tone for England's fightback. In the fourth innings, he relied on conventional methods, attacking with the ball while defending with strategic field placements. Stokes' approach, combined with effective bowling from Jack Leach and Hartley, played a crucial role in dismantling India's batting lineup.

England's Bowling Strategy and Adaptability

England's bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, showcased adaptability and strategic brilliance. Despite an injury to experienced spinner Jack Leach and initial struggles of debutant Hartley, the bowlers adapted to the conditions and exploited the weaknesses of the Indian batsmen. England's ability to control the lengths and maintain pressure in the crucial moments of the game proved to be a game-changer.

Final thoughts

England's triumph in the first Test match against India at Hyderabad will be remembered as one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Test cricket history. Ollie Pope's heroic innings, Tom Hartley's debut brilliance, and the strategic captaincy of Ben Stokes were pivotal in overcoming the daunting challenge posed by the Indian team. As both teams gear up for the next encounters in the series, the lessons learned from this epic clash will undoubtedly shape the narrative of the battles to come.

Despite this setback, I'm sure Team India will fight back and come hard.

Khelenge behtar, aur jeetenge bhi..

Kyunki haara wahi, jo ladaa nahin!

2023: An Indian cricketing retrospective of the year

I began writing this article thinking that I will revisit the year but truth be told, I'm still not over the World Cup Final. I know I should forget it but the heart is too agog with what-ifs and so-near-yet-so-far for a team that truly deserved that glory but anyway, I will not belabor the point. As I sit down to reflect on the past year, the cricketing landscape unfolds like a vivid tapestry of emotions, victories, defeats, and the undying spirit of the game. The year 2023 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with exhilarating highs and heart-wrenching lows. From the thrill of dominating performances to the agony of missed opportunities, the cricketing journey of the year has left an indelible mark on every fan's heart.

The first chapter of this tale is written in the language of heartbreak. The World Test Championship (WTC) Final stands out as a bitter pill to swallow. We had fought tooth and nail to earn our place in the final, displaying grit and determination throughout the tournament. However, destiny had other plans, and on that final day, victory slipped through our fingers. It was a hard pill to swallow, but amidst the disappointment, a resilient spirit emerged. No, we are not chokers. The narrative may suggest otherwise, with our struggles in knockout matches becoming a recurring theme, but we believe in our abilities. The defeats hurt, but they also fuel the fire within us to rise above and conquer.

The One Day International (ODI) Final was another heartbreak etched into the annals of our cricketing journey. We were not just contenders; we were the thorough favorites to clinch the ODI World Cup 2023, playing on our home turf. The road to the final had been paved with dominant performances, showcasing our prowess in every aspect of the game. The parallels to the historic 2003 World Cup Final between Australia and India are uncanny. We found ourselves on both ends of the spectrum – the underdog triumphing in 2003 and the favorite falling short in 2023. It's a bitter irony that adds a poignant layer to our narrative. The wounds are fresh, but they serve as a reminder that cricket is a game of uncertainties, where victory and defeat dance on the fine line of fate.

However, amidst the heartbreaks, there were moments of sheer brilliance and resilience. Our Test cricketing journey was a beacon of hope and accomplishment. From the series against Australia at home to the historic Test win in the Caribbean, our red-ball performance spoke volumes. The test of character in the longer format of the game brought out the best in our players. The art of patience, strategy, and skill were on full display, providing a silver lining to our cricketing saga.

As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves on the brink of yet another challenge – the Test series against South Africa in their own backyard. The anticipation is palpable, and the desire to continue our Test success is burning bright. As we pen down these words, the battle is about to unfold on foreign soil. The challenges are immense, but so is our determination to script another chapter of triumph.

Cricket, like life, is a journey of peaks and valleys. The year 2023 has been a testament to this truth. We've tasted the bitter pill of defeat, but we've also savored the sweet nectar of victory. It's a reminder that cricket is not just a sport; it's an emotion that binds us together as fans, players, and dreamers. The heartbreaks will fade, but the memories of fighting against the odds, the roar of the crowd, and the indomitable spirit of the game will linger on.

As we look ahead to the coming year, let us carry the lessons learned from 2023 – the resilience in the face of defeat, the joy of triumph, and the unwavering belief that, no matter what, we are better than our worst day. The cricketing journey continues, and with each passing day, we inch closer to the next chapter in this beautiful saga of leather meeting willow, of passion meeting skill, and of dreams meeting reality. Here's to the heartbreaks that make us stronger, the victories that make us proud, and the undying spirit of cricket that binds us all. Cheers to a new year, new challenges, and the unending love affair with the game we hold dear. Jai ho!

Our near-misses over the last decade - Chronicling an Indian cricket fan's heartbreaks

As I write this piece, I'm still trying to recover from the World Cup final (and still continuing to fail, so why not write about it and such near-misses to vent out everything that's pent up inside for the last decade or so). This World Cup was a great event where the cricketing world witnessed India's 10 exceptional performances in as many matches, leading up to the final. For India, it marked an undefeated streak that held the promise of glory until THAT unfortunate final day.
The Men in Blue, reminiscent of Karna in the Mahabharata, stood impervious, systematically dismantling opponents with clinical precision. However, fate, with its capricious nature, chose the final as the stage for India's moment of vulnerability, leaving the Indian team and its fans to grapple with the cruel and unforgiving sleight of hand that sport can hand out, to the best of the best.

The narrative of India's unbeaten run leading up to the final reads like a cricketing odyssey. Each match served as a chapter in a story of dominance, where the opposition wasn't just defeated but outplayed by a team that seemed destined for greatness. The confidence, skill, and strategic brilliance displayed by the Indian team left fans and critics alike in awe, establishing them unequivocally as the team to beat in the international cricketing arena.

Yet, cricket, as a microcosm of life's unpredictability, dealt a bitter blow on the final day. The culmination of an otherwise flawless journey was marred by an unexpected setback, a day when the cricketing gods seemed to conspire against the Men in Blue. The result, a stark contrast to the preceding victories, left players and fans grappling with the cruel and unpredictable nature of the sport they hold dear.

Beyond the cricketing arena, the aftermath of the final exposed more than the vulnerability of the Indian team; it laid bare the mentality of cricket fans in neighboring countries. For some, celebrating India's defeat transcends healthy rivalry, descending into the realm of misguided joy. The recurring narrative of ICC equals BCCI, often brandished in moments of Indian triumph, evaporates when defeat befalls the team, underscoring the need for a more sportsmanlike appreciation of the game irrespective of national loyalties.

While this loss may rekindle the 'chokers' tag for India, it's imperative to delve deeper into the team's consistent performance across various formats and tournaments. The list of near misses in crucial matches reads like a poignant chronicle of heartbreak.

Here’s a recap:

1) Final - T20 World Cup 2014

2) Semi Final - ODI World Cup 2015

3) Semi Final - T20 World Cup 2016

4) Final - ICC Champions Trophy (ODI) 2017

5) Semi Final - ODI World Cup 2018

6) Final - World Test Championship 2021

7) Semi Final - T20 World Cup 2022

8) Final Test - India Vs England 2022 (could have given a Test series win in England)

9) Final - World Test Championship 2023

10) Final - ODI World Cup 2023

These aren't just missed opportunities; they are poignant moments that define India's resilience and ability to compete at the highest echelons of the sport consistently.

These so-near-yet-so-far encounters aren't just statistical entries; they are chapters in the narrative of India's unwavering spirit. Each instance where victory slipped through their fingers underscores their mettle and determination, proving that cricket, much like life, is a journey. The path is as significant as the destination, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks is the true measure of a champion.

In reflection, as India reviews their World Cup campaign, it's not merely about the final defeat but the entire journey that led them to that precipice. The journey, marked by strength, skill, and an unyielding spirit, is a testament to the resilience of Indian cricket. While the flame may have flickered in the final, the fire of Indian cricket continues to burn brightly, casting its glow across the global cricketing landscape.

Amidst the glory and heartbreak, one cannot overlook the lessons embedded in India's cricketing journey. The undefeated streak leading to the final showcased the pinnacle of excellence, while the final defeat served as a reminder of the sport's inherent unpredictability. Cricket, a sport that mirrors life's highs and lows, challenges its players and fans alike to navigate the intricate balance between success and failure.

The aftermath of the final also draws attention to the complex dynamics of cricket fandom. The celebration of a rival's defeat, often clouded by misguided joy, exposes a darker side of the cricketing fraternity. Healthy competition should foster appreciation for skill and sportsmanship rather than becoming a breeding ground for divisive narratives and conspiracy theories.

As India faces the possibility of renewing the 'chokers' tag, it is essential to contextualize these moments within the broader scope of their cricketing journey. The list of near misses in significant tournaments is not a testament to inherent weakness but a showcase of India's unwavering presence at the forefront of international cricket. The consistency across formats and conditions globally positions India as a cricketing powerhouse, and the near misses only serve to fuel the determination to secure future triumphs.

The near-victories etched in recent cricketing history aren't merely statistical footnotes; they are the building blocks of India's cricketing identity. Each heartbreaking moment, from the T20 World Cup 2014 to the ODI World Cup 2023, contributes to the resilience and character of the team. The ability to bounce back from the precipice of defeat is what separates champions from contenders, and India's cricketing journey embodies this spirit.

In conclusion, the World Cup campaign, with its peaks and valleys, serves as a microcosm of India's cricketing narrative. The journey, marked by an unbeaten streak, unfortunate setbacks, and near misses in crucial matches, reflects the ebb and flow of the sport. As the Men in Blue navigate the aftermath of the final, the focus must shift from a singular defeat to the broader context of their cricketing journey – a journey characterized by resilience, skill, and an unyielding spirit that ensures the flame of Indian cricket continues to burn brightly on the global stage.
